IP’s, who needs IP’s?

Today, I’m going to shed some light on our IP provisioning process. This is the process that happens when an “IP Request Form” is submitted via our website. Believe it or not, we receive quite a few requests that are incomplete. This can ultimately cause a delay in getting the new IP addresses to you. I hope to clarify and outline the whole process. This will make it clearer as to what information we require to complete the request.

Part 1 - Contact Information: For your security, we will verify this matches the information we have on file. IP requests can only be submitted from an authorized contact on the account.

Part 2 – Number of IP Addresses: IP addresses are setup in blocks of 1, 5, 13, 29, and higher (usable). Typically, customers do not go over 29, but if there is a justified need for more we can definitely get them to you! For example, if you need 11 IP addresses, it’s typically best to request a block of 13. This will allocate a few extra addresses for future use and will not require you to have separate blocks of IP addresses.

Part 3 – Domain Information: This is where you provide information as to which domain(s) will be used on each IP address.

Part 4 – Name-Based Hosting: This is where you state if you are currently using name-based hosting. Information on name based hosting can be found at – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_hosting

If you select no to the above you are then given a text box to give us information as to why name based hosting will not work for your application. One example of this is for SSL certificates; they are required to have a dedicated IP address. Once we receive the completed form, we will evaluate your needs to see if there may be anyway we can help you conserve IP space.

Part 5 – Accepting Terms: This states that you agree to utilize at least 80% of the address space you are assigned within 60 days. Failure to do can result in 1-800-HOSTING revoking your IP block.

We at 1-800-HOSTING realize that we may require a bit more information at times compared to other hosts in regards to IP space. We are dedicated to helping conserve IP space and hope this does not cause you too much trouble.
